Xbee Automated haunted house

New to the adafuit community.
I do a haunted house every year, each year has gotten more and more advanced. Animatronic’s , Light control, fog f/x etc.. In 2009 i controlled my haunt via computer, but there where a lot of limitations. I want to create a device with the xbee that communicates with a computer and activates a prop (Animatronic). Each prop would have a xbee device that has a PIR sensor, or mat switch, when a person triggers it the xbee will communicate with the other xbee connected to the computer. I want multiple devices but don’t know what hardware/ software to purchase. The device with the xbee would only trigger prop’s, via relays the props all have there own microcontrollers and electronics that are activated with a dry contact. Any input on this idea would be appreciated.

Hi all, I'm a bit stuck with some of the XBee stuff. My aim is to get 6 XBee modules, each connected to a switch and powered by battery, to send their switch data (1 or 0) to another XBee which is sat on an Arduino (on an XBee shield). What I have : A few XBee Series 1 modules and the Sparkfun XBee explorer board (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8687) I'm using a couple of Arduino Fio boards, each of which has an XBee on it and it communicates with an XBee connected to my computer. As in, I have 4 Arduino boards, each in communication with one XBee par (ie. 8 XBee's in total). I'm trying to figure out if I can use the 4 Arduino + Xbee's to communicate with my computer via ...Would all I need to order to make a remote temperature sensor/light sensor is: - Two XBee + Two XBee adapter units (one for the logging computer and one for the remote sensor) - An FTDI cable to connect the XBee to the computer - Some sort of micro controller and developer board for said MCU - A temperature sensor the mentioned MCU can read and send to the XBee. The catch is the commands will be issued by a non-Xbee device (TI USB dongle). So I don't have access to those XBee API commands for querying/setting DIO/AD lines. They are able to communicate with each other. I wanted to ask suppose if i will configure one xbee as a end device/router. Then remove it from those boards and then give a separate power supply to Pin 1 and 10 then the communication is possible? i.e. if these xbee can work as a stand alone module or i have to connect microcontroller with xbee to make it as a end device? I only got it to communicate once so far since it started doing this, and that was when I kept my other device on for a couple of minutes and then turned on the other XBee... but I think I just had good luck that time. What has been happening is that the XBee will get powered, flicker the TX and RX leds, and then wait and light up the RSSI led, but then after the RSSI led turns off it just sits there ...Hello I am a final year student embarking on a final year project which involves XBees as the main communication module. However if I send data from Xbee 2 the data recieved by Xbee 1 just appears as dots in the terminal program. The other xbee is connected to a computer to receive the output(co-ordinator). Now i have a loop in tthe code in the netduino where i send data from to the computer. It is the same data everytime(this is to test that i can commnicate using the xbee). When i start the netduino, the computer never receives the netduino xbee packets until after a few seonds(5-20secods). There is one Xbee-coordinator and one router/end device. If both where placed in the Digi USB-development boards (XBIB-U-DEV) they work well. But when I place the "end device Xbee" in my application, this Xbee only receives messages from the coordinator.
