Suggestion: debug Linux in general
I am trying to boot Linux on my development board and it stucks
somewhere, — I do not see log in prompt on my Hyper Terminal. I am new
to embedded Linux stuff, and not sure how to debug this.
In standalone mode, I usually start GDB to trace the software and
see on which code is the problem, but how should I do for Linux? I was
told briefly that Linux turns on MMU in the very early stage which makes
it very difficault to debug kernel. How true is it?
I wonder if there are very good book/tutorial about Linux debug in
this booting phase? I checked out “Building Embedded Linux”, it mentions
some linux debug using GDB, but not in details and seems only for
Any suggestion is higjly appreciated.

I mean without the Linux on the Grashopper. Can I build standalone applications and load them somehow into the board without using a JTAG programmer. Maybe U-Boot can also load binary images? Is there a sample project somewhere which shows the way it goes? You may ask why I want to do so? Thanks amp Regards, Ghanshyam Rajsthan - IndiaI'm an experienced embedded software developer but I've never used Linux or GCC. Which Linux distribution would you recommend for a beginner? I expect to be able to dual boot with Windows. I was planning to buy the Red Hat Linux 9 Bible but Red Hat has moved on to newer versions. Is there something else that would be better? Thanks Kevin -- [Remove ".invalid"s to respond by email.]Hello! I have a board based on AT91SAM9263-EK with a little but annoying difference: SDRAM is smaller. Because of this difference I can't use prebuilt images. So I've build some on my own. I've built AT91Bootstrap which directly loads the linux kernel. I am using AT91Bootstrap-1.15. Linux-18.104.22.168 and the root-filesystem is built using buildroot. When watching the serial port I get the following output (please do not feel disturbed by the debug messages): Code:Hey all.. I am interested in getting into embedded Linux! I bought a few text books on Linux and embedded systems... But, I don't know where to start in terms of an evaluation board and compiler, iv'e Googleed it and there is just so much info! Any one have a good idea for me? Preferably I would want something that has many i/o lines and is below $200 USD, with a decent (free) compiler, USB and Ethernet.
