Is it possible to program over rs232(first time) on a AVR Development Board for Atmel

I have not got a jtag cable jet, so i was wonder if there is any chance that i can use rs 232? Just use (data send, data recive and ground)

Hello everyone, I need helps with connecting the microcontroller to my laptop. I've just ordered an ATMEL AVR Mega128 ATMEGA128 development board and it is on the way to my home. I wanted to connect the development board to my laptop through the usb cable. At the moment i've got a USB to RS232 Serial 9Pin MALE Cable Adapter which i think i can plug in the usb cable to the laptop side and the RS232 male plug into the development board which has the RS232 serial port as well. Testing the board with 7S64, JTAG seems different, after 1st programming attempt it fails to program but micro stalled, then a manual reset via jumper thats connected to JTAG (pin15 rst) will then allow program to be written to flash. It retails for $10, however the development boards cost over $50. I connected it with the flat cable to my development breadboard with an Atmel Mega162 on it. My board is powered with 5V, and with the same flat cable I can use a borrowed AVR Dragon to read and program and debug the application in the mega162.
