Help with connecting the ATMEL AVR Mega128 ATMEGA128 microcontroller to my laptop.
Hello everyone,
I need helps with connecting the microcontroller to my laptop.I’ve just ordered an ATMEL AVR Mega128 ATMEGA128 development board and it is on the way to my home. I wanted to connect the development board to my laptop through the usb cable. At the moment i’ve got a USB to RS232 Serial 9Pin MALE Cable Adapter which i think i can plug in the usb cable to the laptop side and the RS232 male plug into the development board which has the RS232 serial port as well.
The development board i’ve ordered is this: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI….=STRK:MEWAX:IT
And the USB to RS232 adapter i’ve got is this: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/USB-RS232-Ser…item4aa8856f6e.
So my questions is:
Will this USB to RS232 adapter be able for me to connect, program and debuging to the development board?
Or should i order a USB to JTAG adapter Programmer Debugger?
like this one from ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI….=STRK:MEWAX:ITThanks in advance!

I have an Atom Pro 24 that I have programmed through the IDE interface and the Atom Pro development board. It blinks a few lights. I've tried to replace the serial cable connection with a Connectblue bluetooth RS232 serial port adapter. The PC uses bluetooth and a virtual serial port to commuicate with the Connectblue RS232 adapter. The adapter (DTE devices) is is then connected to the Atom Pro development board (DCE device) with a straight through RS232 cable. The communication link between the PC and the adapter appears to be good; however, when I plug the RS232 cable between the serial ...Friend wanted to give me AVR programmer board for me to try to learn but it use serial RS232 connector, but i don't have it on my labtop. I was told centain USB to serial converter don't work. Can anyone recommend me (try amp true if possible) ready made USB to RS232 or even PCMCIA to RS232, that support AVR or PIC development/programmer board,.... eeerrr....cheap? That way, i can get started learning the AVR immediately. Will this USB to RS232 works? http://www.dlpdesign.com/usb/us232cable.shtml USB base on FTDI chipset. Any help would be appreciated. I have thought use USBKEY-board (at90usb1287)( XP, winavr, avrstudio) for development. But I'm newbie for AVRUSB and map applications and I have few questions. Could I use via USB instead of RS232 with FTDI fot that? I think if I use via USB, I don't need any drivers in laptop ie. VirtualCOM-port and I don need any RS232-USB converter. Then I could connect AVRUSB like plug'n'play to map aplications.???? Just use (data send, data recive and ground) Best regardsTime for spring (summer) cleaning... I listed a few items on Ebay that might of interest to the regular readers of this newsgroup.... (Too bad Ebay wasn't around when I started my company so many years ago.) Don't worry, I'm not going to pull that hokey "I saw this listed on Ebay" stuff, and (fortunately) I don't need to hock my skills/services on Ebay. Just figured some of this stuff could be put to better use in someone's hands than idle on a lab bench. Unfortunately compaq being compaq they used a female sub d socket for rs232 on this laptop not a male. None of the stores I have tried have a male to male 9way rs232 lead. If I use the RS232 cable connections as detailed in the manual for the K8076 (and mentioned elsewhere as the same for the k8048) do I still just connect 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9 ...Dear all, Hi I want to order a development board for ATmega128 (or ATmega64). I need the board to have DB9 connectors for RS232 communication as well, since it accelerates prototyping. I previously bought STK128 from ebay, but I've got problem with programming the chip and I'm suspicious that the board is defected. So I welcome any recommendation from you guys (if you worked with a board previously and you're satisfied with it) Many Thanks SonnetThe ATMEGA128RF is an awesome little chip with integrated wireless. It retails for $10, however the development boards cost over $50. If I got a $18 development board for the simpler ATMEGA128 like this one from ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ATMEL-ATMega128 ... 1c2b1adbf9 what would it take to "drop in" an ATMEGA128RF? I know it would require some surface-mount (de)soldering and a small antenna, but are there significant other considerations that would make this transplant more trouble than it's worth?Hi, This could be posted elsewhere in forum but coulddn't find an appropriate or better section. This is more relevant from electronic question rather than a ME software. Anyway. From ME bootloader provided examples you can find in this excellent bootloader.txt file : Quote: However.. using the bootloader program and a simple 3 wire connector (RS232) we can reprogram the hand held devices thousands of times VERY easily using a simple serial cable AND say a normal laptop. This is an adapter from a standard USB connection to provide a standard RS232 interface. It comes with an interface adapter board, a USB cable, an RS232 cable, and a driver disk. The kit works great and is reasonably priced. I have been having a problem in trying to use two of these kits with my laptop simultaneously, though. When the first kit is plugged in, it is correctly enumerated and the Hardware Profile shows a COM port available. When the second kit is plugged into the USB, it has an ...Hey, I'm using an Arduino Duemilanove (http://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoBoardDuemilanove). I want to use it to communicate with a DCE using RS232. I've already tried using a MAX232A chip to convert TTL voltages to RS232 voltages using this: http://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ArduinoSoftwareRS232. But I want to be able to do that without creating prototype circuits. So I bought a USB to rs232 converter (something like this: http://www.usbgear.com/computer_cable_details.cfm?sku=USBG-RS232-F12ampcats=199ampcatid=482%2C199%2C601%2C461) and plugged it into the usb port of the Arduino (using an A to B type usb converter). I compiled my basic program in PIC C compiler. For the programming, I do not have any ICD hardware. I first attempted sending the hex file through Hyper Terminal to the ISP-Pro programming board which I have connected to the 28/40 with the phone cable. This was a fail. I then tried using the ISP-Pro to Melabs universal adapter that came in my kit. I tried it once without any microcontroller attached and then with all of them attached. Once running with a DC 16V supply, and linked to my Dell laptop, the programming application refused to recognize the device. After having carefully checked all the critical points on the board, I drastically shorten the RS232 cable to virtually nothing : I welded together one male and one female plug pin to pin. Nothing has changed, and I changed my mind. Maybe my laptop serial port does not send strong signals enought for the kit. I have hard times with schematics, as I am just learning, could someone take a look and see if I can just use TTL? Update: So I read up, and I know what the MAX232 chip does.
