Can I use 2nd laptop USB to power Prop Demo Board?
I’m a newbie, so beg pardon if this is a dumb question.
As I’m learning/developing with the Propeller Demo Board, I’m always hooked up to my laptop via USB. I also have to carry around a battery pack to power the Demo Board. The laptop has unused USB ports which can provide 5+ VDC and (according to specs) no more than 2 Amps.
Can I cannibalize an old USB cable, solder on a barrel plug, and use it to power the Demo Board?
My only 5 VDC usage is for a single servo.

Granted I am not driving motors or running all 8 cogs hard core, would the power from the USB be enough to keep the board happy (propeller+FTDI)? I know in order to do that I would need to bypass the 5V regulator and put the Vdd from the USB straight into the 3.3V regulator. I looked on the parallax website and it says you need a "Power req: 6 - 9 VDC, 300mA+, 2.1mm barrel jack, center positive tip" and I thought USB could do up to 500mA safely.... I really want to be able to do this because I ...OK, So I just received my shiny new Propeller Demo Board. I just have one question before I get started. I plugged in the USB cable and my system found it without any problems and everything installed. I have not yet plugged a power supply in and I just want to make sure that it has to be plugged in for the Spin program to find it, or should it find it without having the external power??? I know this may seem like an odd question, but I just want to make sure I have it right before frying anything. ...Today I dug out my old demo board and installed the default demo program on it that outputs to the tv... The one with the counting 0 - 9 and some vector graphics. Something seems odd. On the demo board is the video cut off on top and bottom? Like the top 1/4 of the number cut off? Seems odd. I would like to know if the USB connector on the XBee USB Adapter Board can be connected to the USB connector on the Propeller Demo Board via a USB cable ? I am trying to avoid using additional propeller pins on the demo board. I did not see this mentioned in the XBee Tutorial - Chapter 2 Draft "Parallax XBee Adapter Boards" .We have developed our own board based on the Tower Demo board. Our board is fitted with a 48MHz crstal as is the demo board but when we run exactly the same application code on our board it seems to be running much slower. Both CLKMOD pins are tied LOW as default on the TWR demo board and XTAL is tied high (likewise on the demo board). Using the HelloWorld demo serial data is corrupted from our board while the demo works fine. For example pk3cmd /P18F45K20 /V3.250 /GFMyHex.hex But every time I issue a command, the board shuts back down again. I think made another STUPID mistake. I think I hooked up the PicKIT3 to the demo board before I configured it for external voltage. I had been working with a 5V PIC and I will bet it was set to 5VDC output. My demo board is a 3.3 V PIC. There are some sample firmware from the latest microchip framework (v.2.5), and also one from Jan Axelson (lvr.com). Many of the firmware have claimed that they have been tested on the board i have. So I went on and compiled the one of the HID project using MPLAB IDE, and they compiled and built with no error. I then programmed the .HEX file to the board using the bootloader, and it also went smoothly. But after I reset ...Just received a brand new ATDVK90CAN1. Applied power expecting to see the demo program run(the manual says it's already loaded), but outside of the power LEDs lighting there was no activity. I have try connect my pickit3 and the demo board and build the pickit3 lessons, learn to program and debug on the demo board Problem occurs when I try to build lesson 7 (using ADC Lesson) using release configuration, it successfully build in debug configuration and program the demo board went fine with debug device set to pickit3. the code can be execute, step over, step through etc. in mplap without problem.
